Method in the Madness (Method TBC)
You might be asking why a photographer and Moorland guide is writing about such seemingly disparate stuff.
You're not?
Then move along 🤣
Those of you still here may have noticed I've recently been writing articles with zero relevance to what I do. The easy explanation is that hardly anybody is interested in what I do, so I might as well write about whatever I like.
The truer explanation is somewhat messier. Plenty of people would be interested if they knew I existed, but I don’t have the resources for paid promotion, and I refuse to bend to some touristy vision of Dartmoor and a style of photography I detest (I take photographs to capture what I feel about the moor, not what others want to see).
So, I remain largely unknown, and definitely never flavour of the month. That's a choice as much as a circumstance, and I've made my peace with it.
I don't make things for other people. I make them because it's a drive. And as a consequence I keep finding things about Dartmoor I find genuinely interesting, and falling down deeper and deeper rabbit holes I have no business being in. There is a final purpose to all this. I'm just not remotely bothered whether it gets read, or whether anyone pays attention at all. I’m naturally curious and I believe that’s what every human being should be driven by, not just artistic types. A closed mind is a wasted mind.
There's method in the madness, as they say.
I'm just not 100% sure what the method is yet.
Random stuff, seriously researched, openly questioning.
Is my take relevant?
Probably not.
But you can bet no other photographer or guide on Dartmoor is wasting their valuable time quite like this.
Now that's a fucking niche.
Here’s some stuff to get your teeth stuck into :
