Dartmoor Photography Workshops

Driven by curiosity and built on purpose

The Wrong Way to Take Photographs

To me, photography isn't about waiting for the perfect light, it's about being present in the moment.

My Dartmoor workshops are about walking, exploring, and experiencing the moor as it truly is, mizzle, wind and blistering heat, flooding rivers, bogs and glorious vistas.

I never set out to capture any specific image; I go out to spend time in and to enjoy Nature, and when photographic opportunities arise along the way, I take advantage of them.

This is photography as an integral part of an adventure, not as a separate pursuit. You'll learn to see the beauty in the unexpected, the drama in the weather, and the story in the landscape as you move through it. This is photography that's alive, dynamic, and deeply connected to the experience of being on Dartmoor.

I’m not saying that there isn’t a technical side to photography, I’m saying that enjoying the moment and spending time outside and having fun taking photographs is a much more desirable way to become a better photographer.

If you’re local to Dartmoor and want to learn more about how I do photography, maybe think about joining my Glavind Strachan Photography Meetup Group on Facebook. I try to organise free walks (mostly on the north of the moor) as often as I have time. There is no judgement and only help on these walks.

Why Learn Photography on Dartmoor?

Dartmoor National Park offers an extraordinary variety of photographic opportunities in easily walkable areas. Granite tors, open moorland, ancient woodlands, rivers, and constantly shifting weather and light.

Working on the moor allows us to explore:

  • Landscape photography techniques in real conditions

  • Composition using natural forms and textures

  • Working creatively with changing weather

  • Finding photographs beyond obvious viewpoints

As a fully qualified Hill & Moorland Guide as well as a photographer based in Devon, I plan workshops around locations chosen for both accessibility and photographic potential, adapting each session to the conditions on the day as well as to your capabilities.

Things to Bring On Your Workshop

A Different Approach to Photography Workshops

These workshops are not about chasing perfect images or complicated technical theory.

They’re about slowing down, learning to notice light and landscape, and developing your own way of seeing.

Dartmoor rewards patience and curiosity and photography becomes a way of experiencing the place more deeply.

Anybody who has walked with me, either to take photographs, or to just enjoy the views and the outdoors will know that I truly believe that getting outdoors (anywhere, not just on Dartmoor) has a massively positive effect on your wellbeing, I just don’t think that the kind of boost that Nature provides should come at any extra cost.

Imperfection is underrated

My Dartmoor Photography Workshops are for people who share the idea that better photography come from genuine experience rather than through technical perfection.

If you're looking for a photography workshop that prioritises adventure, exploration, and authentic storytelling over gear obsession and golden hour chasing, we should talk.

No two people are the same, no two photographers will see the same scene the same way. The beauty is in those differences

Photography Workshop FAQ’s

  • No, not at all. Any camera, even your phone camera is fine. It’s not about gear, It’s about getting creative and enjoying yourself.

  • Of Course. Some people I have taken for hikes have only taken up photography “after” walking on Dartmoor.

  • Obviously I’m biased, I believe Dartmoor’s weather is part of its character, part of it’s charm. However, workshops may be adjusted or rescheduled if I feel conditions are unsafe.

  • Yes. I can organise customised gift vouchers if required.
