Hello, I'm Paul. I photograph Dartmoor almost entirely through old film glass, lenses older than I am adapted onto modern cameras, because I'm after images that are true rather than merely accurate. The moor at its most honest: mist that won't clear on cue, weather that ruins the plan and makes the picture, the overlooked corners most people walk straight past.
I'm a fully qualified Hill & Moorland Leader, so I can take you safely into those corners, on a guided Dartmoor photography walk, a one to one, or a small workshop, and a Devonian who has wandered this moor for forty years, so I know where they are.
I also shoot bespoke portrait sessions on Dartmoor: creative, cinematic, for artists, writers and anyone who wants something genuinely their own. And if you'd like a piece of the moor for your wall, there are fine art Dartmoor landscape prints in the shop.
If you want the postcard shot, there are people who'll teach you that. If you want to see Dartmoor differently, that's what I do.

What can I expect on a guided Dartmoor photography walk?
Guided photo walks include expert location guidance, help with composition and camera settings, and safe navigation across Dartmoor's terrain. Each walk is tailored to your experience level and interests, whether you're a beginner or an experienced photographer.
Do I need photography experience to join a workshop or guided walk?
No experience is required. Beginners are more than welcome, and sessions are completely adapted to your skill level. More advanced photographers can focus on creative techniques, composition and so on, or choose what you'd like to concentrate upon.
What should I bring on a Dartmoor photography walk?
A camera (any type, even your phone), waterproofs and warm clothing, sturdy footwear, water, food and an open mind. All these things will be discussed before meeting up.
Are your guided walks suitable for all fitness levels?
Most walks are accessible to anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. As a fully qualified Hill & Moorland Leader, I tailor routes to your ability and make sure all walks are safe, enjoyable and appropriate for the conditions. I've walked with people with various conditions and always make sure your comfort is uppermost in my plans.
Do you offer one-to-one photography tuition?
Yes. One-to-one tuition is available for photographers who want focused guidance on technique, composition or creative development. These sessions can be combined with a guided walk for a more immersive experience.
Can I book a themed portrait session on Dartmoor?
Yes. I offer creative, atmospheric portrait sessions inspired by Dartmoor's landscape, mythology and personality. These shoots are ideal for individuals, couples, artists and anyone wanting unique portraits in a dramatic natural setting. I'm also happy to shoot elsewhere, closer to your home or at a special personal place.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my booking?
Dartmoor's weather is part of its character, and moody conditions often create the most atmospheric images. However, if conditions become unsafe or unsuitable, we can reschedule at a mutually agreeable time.

How long does a guided photo walk or workshop last?
How long is a piece of string? Most portrait sessions last between one and two hours, though it depends on the package you choose. Guided walks can last up to eight hours or longer, depending where and what you'd like to see.
Can you help me choose the best locations to photograph on Dartmoor?
Of course. With extensive local knowledge and professional navigation training, I can guide you to locations that match your interests. If I'm unfamiliar with an area, I have a network of other Dartmoor guides I can ask for advice, or pass your details on to.

I'm based in the middle of nowhere, close to the village of Northlew, about six miles from Okehampton and the northern edge of Dartmoor. I travel all over the moor and beyond.
