Dartmoor Portrait Shoots - The Lady of The Lake

Dartmoor can be the perfect setting for atmospheric, myth, fantasy and legend inspired portrait photography.

For our “Lady of the Lake” themed shoot, I collaborated with my long time creative friend Charlie to bring a touch of magic to the moors.

A Creative Portrait Collaboration on Dartmoor

I met Charlie over 8 years ago now, when I was first in the process of finding people who were willing to let me take their photograph. I had lots of ideas and hardly anybody to try them out on.

We met up initially in a local café, so Charlie could give me the once over and check I wasn’t some kind of nutter … (although many people might consider me to be a bit odd) I’m definitely not that kind of nutter, so we’ve collaborated on many projects since then 😍

Planning a Themed “Lady of the Lake” Portrait Session on Dartmoor

Late in 2024 I got a message from Charlie asking if I’d be up for an ethereal “Lady of The Lake” inspired shoot …

… never one to forgo the opportunity to shoot some fantasy photography … especially if there is water involved, I jumped at the chance.

We discussed some locations and a vague plan of attack and on a not particularly pleasant, nor unpleasant day in November we met up (with Charlie’s friend … who luckily could keep an eye on the unruly dog) at Four Winds on Dartmoor.

Moody, Magical, and Myth Inspired Photography

We had discussed going to one of the quarry lakes, but decided it was a little too cold for any full immersion shots, and the little stream below Kings Tor was easily accessible, as well as having some rather photogenic willow 😍

Charlie is amazing with fashion and design, bringing along her own costume and accessories. She’s also great to work with because she’s as equally good at “getting on with it” and taking direction from an idiot in a wetsuit😂

Are You Interested in a Themed Portrait Session on Dartmoor?

Themed portrait photoshoots on Dartmoor have become a bit of a speciality.

Years of enjoying fantasy fiction and embracing my own desire to enjoy the outdoors and then combining it with other’s desires to have fun whilst creating some magical images, means I’m always getting soggy or covered in mud!

I’ve even taken this to the extreme with my Underwater Portraits (Charlie helped out here again).

FAQ: Themed Portrait Sessions on Dartmoor

What exactly are your themed portrait sessions on Dartmoor?

My portrait sessions are creative photoshoots built around an idea you may have, a single concept, a mood, or a story or character you enjoy.

I then plan something around Dartmoor’s dramatic landscapes to make it the perfect location for exploring your artistic vision.

From folklore inspired characters to moody, cinematic portraits. Each session is personally tailored to the individual, blending your personality with the wild character of the moor.

Do I need to bring my own costume?

You’re welcome to bring your own outfit, a hairstylist, a makeup artist (the list is endless) but I’m always happy to help out with styling suggestions (and extra hands) if the theme requires this. For many themes I find that simple flowing fabrics, natural tones, and textured layers work wonderfully against Dartmoor’s landscape. I heartily suggest letting your imagination run wild.

What if I’ve never done a portrait shoot before?

Most of my clients have never modelled before and in my opinion that becomes an integral part of the magic. Where I can, I’ll guide you through posing, movement, and expression so you feel comfortable and natural. The whole idea is to try and create images that feel authentic, atmospheric, and uniquely you📷

How long does a themed portrait session last?

My Themed Photoshoots typically last between one and two hours, this of course depends heavily on both the concept and location (I’m happy to hike further on to the moor). This will give us time to explore different spots, work with the available light, or to organise any set pieces we might have planned.

What happens if the weather isn’t great?

Dartmoor’s weather is notoriously unpredictable, however (as I’ve said elsewhere) that’s sometimes what creates the most dramatic, moody portraits.

Light rain, mist, and shifting clouds can add incredible atmosphere to an image. Of course, if conditions become unsafe or your personal circumstances mean being cold and damp isn’t an option, we can simply reschedule the shoot.

If I have a favourite location can we shoot there?

Absolutely, as long as there aren’t any restrictions on where you want to shoot, I actively encourage people to pick places where they feel comfortable.

I can suggest locations based on your chosen theme, or you can choose a place that feels meaningful to you. As a qualified Hill & Moorland Leader, I try to ensure all locations are safe, accessible, and suited to the style of images you want and any personal needs you may have.

How do I book a themed portrait session?

You’re free to get in touch through my contact page or explore my portrait packages to find the option that suits you best. None of these packages are set in stone, all are completely customisable and I’m always happy to chat through ideas before you commit.
