A Wander to Bleak House

A few weeks ago, we went for a wander to Bleak House aka The Managers Cottage at Rattlebrook Peat Works.

We parked at the Prewely Moor parking area and set off to climb Sourton Tors. Even this way (which is much less steep than setting off from the Church in the village of Sourton) is not an easy climb ... the weather at the time had dried out most of the boggy areas, but even then, had to have a rest halfway up.

It's at this point we saw the eldery couple give up ... and head back down.

Once on top of the Tor (Tors) it's a much easier stroll to the beginning of the Rattlebrook Railway Track, which runs to the edge of Rattlebrook Peat Works (and you can actually spot parts of the old track now and again) though it's mostly just a dirt and stone trail now.

Don't forget to stop and take in the magnificent view over Lake on your way to the railway ... if I remember, I'll add a map into this bit in the future. Or chase me up for details!

Once you have passed along the top of the valley that looks down to Lake (you'll see the bridge that form's part of the Granite Way cycle and footpath) just over the brow of the next rise, you'll spot the turning point for what was once the Rattlebrook Peat Railway.

The railway used to carry peat (might have given that away with the name) from the Rattlebrook Peat Works (where we are heading) past Great Nodden and down towards The Fox & Hounds Hotel.

We're not going that way!

If you follow the left hand fork of the track, and just keep walking, you'll eventually make it to the peat works itself.
