Photography Walk - Sourton Tors in the Snow

On New Years Eve 2020 my third 'trial run' (socially distanced) Photography Walk took place.

I met up with Gideon (who I already knew a little from various local photography groups) at lunchtime, having forgotten that snow invariably attracts people in droves to the moor, I couldn't park at my usual and preferred spot, but had to make do with a location a few minutes walk from anything actually green (white).

If you take a look at the video, you'll see that the day turned out a little more dramatic than we expected!

As I live fairly close to Sourton, if I'm ever in need of a quick fix of Dartmoor, it's usually my first stop!

Knowing it was going to be snowy (though there was none of the white stuff on the roads) I decided it best to meet somewhere close to a main road, in case (as it did) there was further snowfall ❄

All my walks are designed around you. I try to get to know a little bit about who you are, and what you hope to achieve.

Obviously this was a little easier in this case as I knew Gideon from past meetings, and knew exactly what he was after.

Since starting my walks, one of the things I've discovered I seem to do differently than most people is I don't distinguish between the walking and the photography.

I'm a photographer, so obviously I want to take photographs.

I therefore pick walking routes that provide me with possible nice images.

I keep my camera out all the time ... sometimes I take no photographs, but the camera is always ready.

If you spot something interesting off the beaten track (and you aren't likely to die investigating) ... go and have a look!

So, the same tree shot in three different ways, I like all of them 😍

I'm fairly sure some people won't enjoy all of them, but when nature parks a view like that in front of you ... take the shot ... take as many shots as you can!

Then there's the other important thing to remember ... turn around and check what's behind you!

Once we got back onto the track, another 5 minutes walking in the increasingly heavy snow, meant the decision was made to return whilst we could still see the track 😍

An exceptional walk with Gideon, I can't obviously promise such spectacular views as we were lucky to witness, but I can guarantee a memorable time.

Why not drop me a line and we'll get together soon 😍
